A review of developments in cathodic protection systems for reinforced concrete structures

Cathodic protection is a corrosion management strategy for deteriorating reinforced concrete structures or it can be used as preventative measure in situations where may expected during the service life result of environmental exposure conditions. The technology has advanced over time. There are now number different systems that conveniently considered three categories, including impressed current cathodic (ICCP), hybrid (HCP), and galvanic (GCP). Asset owners need to choose which option use possibly without understanding sustainability, environmental, health safety, construction, technical, operational, monitoring aspects. Generally, agreed among engineers ICCP most powerful robust solution with widespread deterioration. HCP GCP also viable options, even aggressive environments future maintenance intervention. advantages disadvantages each system discussed detail. This paper explains why commonly accepted expectancy 50 75 years compared GCP, typically limited 15-30 years. details likely requirements, associated timescales, whole-life costs 100-year design analysed references sustainability. That includes discussion about presents lowest embodied carbon environments.
